Introduction of LEATS

After a lull of about 3 years, funding into Indian AgTech is anticipated to grow in 2025. There is an estimated number of 3,000 active AgTech startups in the country. As per TeamLease Services, the AgTech sector is expected to create 60,000-80,000 new employment opportunities over the next five years. The Economic Times mentioned there are 19 agritech soonicorns and 40 minicorns in the country. The Union Government and some of the State Governments have rolled out a slew of measures to support the AgTech startup ecosystem. The launch of a Rs 750-crore fund AgriSure (Agri Fund for Startups & Rural Enterprises) to provide financial support to agritech startups is a huge step. The Union Budget 2025-26 also mentioned a new Fund of Funds, with expanded scope and a fresh contribution of another 10,000 crore.

A lion’s share of total active AgTech startups is located and working in the south and western regions of the country. On the contrary, AgTech adoption as well as the number of startups in the eastern region of the country is very skewed. AgTech startups based out of this region enjoy limited access to the industry network, investors, domain experts, mentors, etc. Agribusinesses and AgTech startups from other geographies are also looking to collaborate with suitable local stakeholders for business development, product marketing & distribution, etc. Inadequate access to credit as one of the primary impediments to agricultural development in eastern India. BCC&I and ThinkAg felt the dire need of a rich and diverse AgTech ecosystem focused in this region. To kickstart a beginning of this ambitious journey, both the organisations have come forward to initiate an annual event viz. Look East AgTech Summit (LEATS), which will bring together farmer collectives, Startups, Scaleups, Policymakers and Govt institutions, Corporates, Financial Institutions, Investors, Incubators, Grassroot organisations, CSRs / Foundations, ICAR institutes, Agri Universities, IITs IIMs, etc. from West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Manipur & Mizoram and rest of India. The platform will also connect stakeholders from the neighbouring countries like Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh.
